Joost N. Kok has worked at the Free University in Amsterdam, at the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science in Amsterdam, at Utrecht University, and at the Åbo Akademi University (Finland). He obtained his PhD in Computer Science at the Free University in Amsterdam in 1989. Since 1995 Joost N. Kok is professor in fundamental computer science and since 2005 also professor in medicine at Leiden University. He (co-)authored more than 200 publications and was promotor for 18 PhD students. His research is concentrated around the themes (scientific) data management, data mining, bioinformatics, algorithms. He is the head of the research clusters Algorithms and Foundations of Software Technology of the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science. He is also member of the management team of the Netherlands Bioinformatics Center, board member of the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science and editor of seven scientific journals. Moreover, he is the external examiner of the MSc in Computer Science at the University of Malaya.
