He is the founder and head of the Structural and Genomic Information Laboratory (a core unit of the French National Center for Scientific Research), the director of the Institute of Structural Biology and Microbiology (a cluster of 9 laboratories), and the head of the bioinformatics program of Marseille-Nice Genopole. He is a former laboratory chief at the Pasteur Institute (Paris-France, 81-90), a former group leader at NIH-NCBI (Bethesda-USA, 91-95), and former director of research for Incyte Pharmaceutical (Palo Alto-USA, 95-96). He is a regular consultant for the pharmaceutical industry, including Novartis, and Sanofi-Aventis, and a member of Science’s board of reviewing editors. He is the co-author of more than 150 articles in international journals and of the best-selling introductory book “Bioinformatics for Dummies”. His current research interest is the origin, evolution and biodiversity of intracellular parasites with an emphasis on the very large DNA viruses such as Mimivirus that is recently co-discovered. His approaches include genome sequencing, comparative genomics, structural genomics, and the development of relevant bioinformatic methods. |
